The Prince Alfred Pass is indeed a remarkable route, connecting Uniondale to the Fourways intersection with the N2 just outside Knysna. The Prince Alfred Pass (R339) is a historic dirt/gravel mountain pass constructed by Thomas Bain in the 1860s. Stretching between Knysna/Plettenberg Bay and Avontuur/Uniondale, it offers a scenic route with spectacular views and interesting flora. However, travelers should note that this is not a shortcut from the Langkloof to Knysna/Plettenberg Bay. Being approximately 150 years old, the pass is very winding and narrow in parts. Additionally, the road surface can be eroded, and there are potholes along the way, so caution is advised.
