Dedication for Memorial to Boer War volunteers

On Wednesday, May 31, 2017, a Dedication Ceremony for the Memorial to commemorate the 23,000 volunteer Australians who fought in the Boer War from 1899 to 1902 was held in Canberra.

Donna Hampton, daughter of Harden’s Ron Hampton is a member of the national committee who have worked tirelessly for 17 years not only to raise awareness of what was the first conflict that Australians fought in as a Nation, but also to raise the funds necessary to build a memorial in our Capital City.

“The memorial consists of four bronze statues sculpted by Louis Laumen, of Australian troopers at 150% of life size, representing examples of Australian mounted soldiers, depicted as a section patrol in the South African veldt.” Ms Hampton said

These Australians were awarded the nation’s first six Victoria Crosses and 161 other decorations for bravery. For the soldiers, the war was about the difficulty of maintaining supplies across long distances in extremes of hot and cold, hard fighting against a skilled opponent.
